Daniel Thipbodee Kerr is a Thai - Pākehā artist living in Tāmaki Makaurau. The Degrees of a Sphere explores the duality of Kerr’s cultural identity and his recent experience of grief.
“If a circle has 360° , how many degrees are there in a sphere?”
This question was raised by Kerr’s late friend and weighs heavy on his mind as he navigates the infinite expanse of grief. After losing a close friend Kerr turned to his making, finding solace in the process.
This body of work is influenced and guided by the infinite nature of a sphere. Each painting helping Kerr navigate his cultural iden- tity and his experience with grief. Kerr seeks to explore ways to foster intuition and higher guidance, with a focus on Eastern Mys- ticism. This can be seen in his process: often flowing between slow and calculated gestures - with pauses for meditation, to sponta- neous and dynamic motion.
Painting also allows Kerr to explore his spiritual relationship to colour, composing forms through the process of gesture and con- templation. Often working from light washes to strong grounds
to seek balance of light and dark. Using motifs such as broken horizons and flowing waters to charter hidden landscapes within a physical and metaphysical realm.
Kerr’s spiritual and emotional experience are in constant flux on the canvas - he manages to hold harmony and intensity all at once.
