Testimonials
ODDLY studios gave creatives like myself who are emerging, a sense of community. During my time in the studios, ODDLY’s ethos was inclusive and invited a variety of creative practices. ODDLY studios had the unique position of being a new artist-run space in the local art scene. Post Covid 19 pandemic, when only established art institutions seemed to be operating, Lexi facilitated studios and an exhibition program to give space for young artists to make art and exhibit. This was no easy task in a time when Tāmaki Makaurau was attempting to revive an arts and culture scene.
As an exhibiting artist, I had first-hand experience working directly with Lexi on the installation of Interim Express. It was an opportunity for me to learn installation skills with someone who is a professional technician. ODDLY’s program maximises giving opportunities for learning for artists. There were multiple series of guest speakers who offered insights to areas in the arts sector every week. This practice extended to the relationship and rapport Lexi would build with the studio artists and exhibiting artists. During the installation, the artist-led ethos of ODDLY was clear. I really appreciated the space Lexi had given to me to feel confident in making decisions. I carry the things I learnt from these early experiences with Lexi and ODDLY every time I approach an installation in my practice now.
