Talk series
In 2023 ODDLY will be hosting six artists who have experience across a range of sectors in the art world. With Have You Heard? we aim to make it easier to gain insight into topics such as art writing, building an online art profile, working and teaching in the arts and applying for funding. We believe sharing our knowledge and experience of existing in the art world is so important. We hope you’ll enjoy the talks and gain a few helpful tips!

The Samoa House Library
Thursday 1st June
We are excited to have Bonni, Hannah and Grace, from Samoa House Library with us this Thursday.
Samoa House Library (SHL), is an initiative that emerged in response to the closures of specialist libraries at The University of Auckland in 2018. SHL is an independent art library offering free alternative education programming and annual artist residencies. We sublet nine studio spaces and house a collection of approximately 7000 books; largely donated or purchased through charitable funds. As kaitiaki at Samoa House Library, it is important to us, wherever possible, to draw the Pasifika community back to this historical building.
Te Ara Minhinnick
Saturday 27th May
Te Ara Minhinnick Hails from Waiuku between the mighty Waikato & Manukau waters, Te Ara employs Indigenous methods of practice through concepts pertaining to her Iwi, Ngaati Te Ata. Growing up under the framework of ‘akona mā te wai’, ‘learning through the medium of water’, Te Ara hopes to apply the observations taught by the Taiao to her artmaking focusing on placemaking through the wayfinding vessels of whenua, one and wai.
Yolunda Hickman
Friday 26th May
Yolunda Hickman has a wealth of knowledge when it comes balancing life as a successful artist and academic. She will be sharing with us her experience developing her thriving art practice and her work as a lecturer. We will cover what goes into writing proposals and grant applications that support art practice.
Hyphen collective

We’ll be chatting to Ana Garcia and Sophia Wu - two of the group of artists that founded HYPHEN!
Hyphen is a project led by and made for Asian artists within Aotearoa. Highlighting the diverse dialogues headed by Asian artists, hyphen seeks to strengthen its community.
Bridging the gap between people and opportunities through friendship, exhibitions, and public-engaged programs, we can explore what it really means to be Asian in Aotearoa.
Jessica Agoston

Jessica Agoston Cleary is the co-founder of Artfull. Since launching in 2022, Artfull has grown to become one of Aotearoa New Zealand's largest online platforms for emerging and independent artists.
Jessica's path back to fine art was anything but linear. After spending over a decade working in the fast paced world of branding and strategy, she returned to university to complete her post grad in art history at the University of Auckland. This was just before the pandemic, so the timing couldn't have been better. For Jessica, it's what art can do, how it can shift the interior and exterior experience of the audience that drives her to do what she does with Arttfull. The more people who discover the magic of art, and the work of talented artists here in Aotearoa the better.
